Alcudia on the Balearic Island of Majorca - Travel Guide

Located in the north-east corner of Majorca, the purpose-built tourist centre of Alcudia is the largest resort in this part of the island and is less than 40 miles from Palma de Mallorca Airport. Popular for family holidays, the resort has a perfect position between two large bays to its north and south. The warm shallow waters here make the resort very popular with families with small children who are looking for the perfect beach holiday. Most of the resort accommodation is found in Puerto de Alcudia and along Alcudia Bay which stretches for nearly ten miles. Playa de Muro is just along the coast from Alcudia and is popular with holiday makers looking for more upmarket hotels and apartments.
Because of Alcudia's ideal position it gives access to lots of sandy beaches and small coves which are great for the whole family to explore.

Stretching for nearly 5 miles along Alcudia Bay is the popular Playa de Alcudia which is one of the longest beaches in the Balearic Islands. With clean shallow waters the beach is a safe option for families with small children. Facilities here include showers and public toilets, sun loungers and parasols, cafes and bars. The whole family will enjoy the range of water sports on offer here including scuba diving, snorkelling, pedalos, banana boat rides, windsurfing, jet skis, water-skiing, kite-sailing, parasailing and canoeing. Catamaran hire and sailing is available from the harbour.
If you are looking for the best beach for relaxing and soaking up the sun then the sandy Morer Vermell is the beach for you. Located just over a mile from Alcudia Old Town, this popular beach has a few hotels nearby and plenty of sun beds and umbrellas available for visitors to use.
However, if you are looking for a secluded spot you will need to travel about 3 miles to Coll Baix. This picturesque beach is backed by steep mountain slopes and pine forests and is completely isolated. The beach is reached by a steep winding path which makes access quite difficult but once you are there you will be amazed by the beautiful azure waters although they are fairly deep close to the shoreline.
Away from the beach there is plenty for the whole family to enjoy on their family holidays to Majorca, including exploring the quaint Old Town and visiting Alcudia's water park, the Hidropark. The park makes a great day out for the family with wave pools, slides and chutes and a giant minigolf centre right next door. Boat trips are very popular in Alcudia with day trips gently sailing around the quiet coves, glass-bottomed boat trips and fishing charters. Many of the boat trips will stop off at secluded spots so that you can take a dip in the beautiful Mediterranean Sea. One trip worth mentioning is an excursion to the Formentor promontory which offers some absolutely stunning views.
For the more energetic the Tramuntana mountain range offers some great hiking and walking terrain. There are many trails that lead you through the beautiful countryside with its verdant woodlands, olive groves, little villages like Arta and Lluc, hidden monasteries and stunning views. These trails are also great for exploring on horseback or you can just take a leisurely ride along the beautiful coastline.
Not to be missed is a trip to the historic capital Palma which is just a short drive from Alcudia. Here you will find cultural attractions, an attractive harbour and lots of fine dining and shopping options.
For golfing enthusiasts Alcudia has one of the best 18-hole golf courses on Majorca.
Evenings are a pretty laid-back affair with a good choice of entertainment offered by the hotels in the resort.
Alcudia enjoys a typically Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and cooler winters which see very little rainfall. If you are looking long, hot sunny days then the best time to visit is in July or August when temperatures peak at around 29C. Throughout the summer season temperatures average in the mid to late 20s with sea temperatures ranging from 20-25C and hardly any rainfall. The coldest months are January and February when daytime temperatures are around 14C and nights are a lot cooler at around 7C. The spring months are the best time to visit for nature enthusiasts as the resort is much quieter and perfect for discovering the scenic surrounding area, especially nearby S'Albufera nature reserve. October is usually the wettest month in Alcudia so should be avoided when looking for travel deals to Majorca.
