Holiday & Travel Guide For South Africa

Sightseeing
South Africa has had its troubles over the years, but after Apartheid ended South Africa opened its doors to tourism and has now become a popular destination, with the World Cup 2010 being the main attraction currently being held there. Cape Town is one of the most popular places to visit, with many attractions. The most visited is Table Top Mountain, being by far the best attraction. This fabulous Mountain can be reached by a walk if you're rather energetic (this will take approximately 1.5 hrs) or for those wanting a more leisurely ride to the top, take the cable car, which will take approximately 45 minutes and provide plenty of photo opportunities before reaching the top. At the top you can have a refreshing drink in the restaurant out of the sweltering heat. Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens are beautiful, it is a botanical paradise. These are set on one side of the Mountain's slope and a must see for flower lovers, especially during the spring and summer months, you could easily spend a few hours there. Take a leisurely drive along the coast line and see the marvellous Twelve Apostles, a group of small mountain peaks which you can also see from Robben Island. Take a 40 minute ferry ride over to see where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned and released after more than 20 yrs detention, the tours are guided by ex prisoners from Robben Island and they have a lot of interesting stories and facts to tell the tourists.

Shopping
Shopping is quite affordable in Cape Town, with many upmarket stores and international chain stores to buy a variety of items, but if you want something more traditional for a gift or souvenir then try the open markets where the locals are selling their handmade crafted items and art work. You will find a whole variety from jewellery and paintings to hand carved goods; if you're looking to bring home a few antiques then take a local taxi drive out to Kalk Bay Market, where you will have a great day out bargaining with the local store holders.
Eating
There is a wide variety of food to choose from in Cape Town, from Mediterranean, international dishes to traditional African cuisine. If you want fine cuisine then try one of the many award winning restaurants, where sea fish is very popular, or if you're a bit more daring you could try Ostrich. If you have travelled to Cape Town on a family budget you will not be short of family friendly restaurants to suit your pocket.
Nightlife
Nightlife is very varied in Cape Town, to suit most tastes from wild and vibrant nightclubs to fabulous Casinos for a night of gambling. You could spend your winnings in one of the cocktail bars along the waterfront, or take in a movie in the cinema that is housed inside Grand West Casino if you want a more relaxed evening with the family. Anything from backpackers laidback bars to trendy upmarket bars are easily found within the town centre.
