Beaches
The Dominican Republic is a beautiful island in the Caribbean and one of the largest. It has some of the best beaches with warm clear waters and white sand. All of these offer a variety of popular water sports like jet skiing, snorkelling and kite boarding. Puerto Plata boasts the most beautiful sugar white sands and is very popular with tourists. You will also find secluded lagoons and, if you're looking for them, nude beaches along the coast.
Sightseeing
The Dominican Republic offers many tourist attractions and a good place to start is the capital, Santo Domingo, with its cobble stoned roads. The city is quite thriving with the National Theatre, medieval fortress and some beautiful parks and interesting museums. If you are interested in history, a journey to San Cristoba to explore the church of Santa Maria is one that attracts many tourists. Then go on to Puerto Plata, that boasts much Victorian style architecture, making it a very attractive town. The Amber Museum is very close by Independence Park, which should be visited, the impressive Fort of San Felipe that now houses the history museum of Puerto Plata is also a spot in the area which is very interesting and well worth the journey from your chosen resort. If you are looking for a thrilling experience then the Zip Line adventure is for you. After a day's excitement doing this, take a leisurely walk to see a series of 27 waterfalls called Damajaqua Cascades, a truly breathtaking view, where for a small fee shoes and helmets are provided for your safety. For those looking for a hair raising experience, take a local taxi drive up to Mount Isabel Del Torres where the views from the top are fabulous. If your head is not in the clouds you can see for miles over the island. There is a cable car to take you up to the top but the taxi ride is a far more interesting experience.
Eating
All of the hotels have an international menu and a few traditional Dominican dishes provided too. The best way to taste the flavours of this island is by going out into the local town restaurants where they are proud of serving local cuisine, with a mix of African, Italian, Spanish and Arabian influences thrown in the mix. With the influences of these countries, it truly makes traditional eating a very tasty experience and at a very reasonable price. If you are looking for fast food, this can be found on the colourful corner food stands where you can buy fried chicken and hamburgers. Santo Domingo also has a lively American cafe/bar serving fries and burgers, it is ideal for those fast food lovers.
Nightlife
The Dominican Republic offers a lot of vibrant nightlife, from nightclubs starting late to fancy casinos, jazz clubs and theatres. One of the favourite pastimes is people watching from the local cafe and bars, where you can interact and make friends with the locals. The nightlife is so varied you will be sure to find something to your liking and for your budget; most hotels have evening entertainment with dancing, family entertainment and live music.
