Fort George - Niagara on the Lake Travel Guide

One of the many historic sites in Niagara on the Lake Ontario, is Fort George. If you are traveling to Niagara, going on a tour of this historic site can make for an enjoyable afternoon. Here is a bit of the history of Fort George.
Fort Georges' primary focus was to defend against an American invasion during the war of 1812. It acted as the headquarters for the British Army.
The forces within the fort were made up by British Soldiers, and the local aboriginal militia. In the Spring on 1813 the Fort was captured by the American forces and was partly destroyed. It then became their own base for the attempted invasion of Upper Canada (present day Ontario). After a long and grueling 7 month battle, the Americans were eventually pushed back and it was recaptured by the British forces.

It was then partly rebuilt, but fell into ruin until the middle of the 1900's when it was restored and made into an historic site.
Present day Fort George is a very popular tourist destination in Niagara on the Lake. You can take a casual or guided walking tour throughout the complex. It is also home to the popular guided ghost tour. The Niagara Parkway also encompasses the Fort allowing you to take a leisurely stroll or bike around the complex. It is a great place to take your kids as well. With canons, old uniforms, and hills to climb, every child can enjoy this site.

If you stay over in Niagara on the Lake, make Fort George a stop on your travels.
